It’s Christmas time! And aside from the flickering Christmas lights everywhere that mystifies your eyes, bazaars and malls that are always full of people for their Christmas shopping and a thickset Noche Buena to gulp down, we have got the Metro Manila Film Festival 2011 that will make us triple somersault excited.
MMFF is on its 37th astounding year of giving us tremendous films, as we all know, during the course of the festival; no foreign movies are shown across the Philippines making it a money-spinning event for the participating production outfits. So say goodbye for the meantime to Mission Impossible 4, The Lion King and other international movies.
The festival movies were preferred by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on the basis of the following criteria:
1. Creativity, Artistry and Technical Excellence, Thematic Value and Global Appeal for 70% and;
2. Filipino Cultural and/or Historical Value for 30%.
So, what awaits us this time around? The Thinking Toast will exploit her finely-honed toasted sense to tell us who’s going to be the top grossing film this year among the seven entries.

7. Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story
VIVA Communications, Inc./Scenema Concept Int’l.
Directed by Tikoy Aguiluz
Directed by Tikoy Aguiluz
Manila Kingpin is based on the story of the notorious gang leader in Tondo named Nicasio "Asiong" Salonga, whose true-to-life accounts had been portrayed in several movie versions since 1961 (starring Joseph Estrada). It is also the first Filipino major film produced in black-and-white in the 21st century as well as the returning action genre movie.
The "Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story" replaced the entry "Mr. Wong" after action star Robin Padilla voluntarily withdrew his film from the race.
Plot/Synopsis
Mobster Asiong Salonga (ER Ejercito) rules the mean streets of Manila with an iron fist—until he is betrayed by a trusted friend. Mr. Salonga was a sanitary inspector who had several brushes with the law in the 1940s and ’50s, charged mostly for illegal possession of firearms. His name was linked to several murders, but somehow he managed to evade arrest. His name brought fear to the residents of Tondo, making him Tondo’s “Number One Tough Guy.” Mr. Salonga was killed at the age of 27 in 1951 when he was gunned down during a drinking session.
"SO that’s it. My prediction who is going to be on top this year. Can these films surpass last year’s gross? That’s on the hands of Filipino moviegoers! So, see you on December 25, 2011 on cinemas! If you see a sexy-cutie-glamorous toasted bread, that’s me. Say hi and we’re good. J"
