The Toast that...Well, Goes to the Movies--MMFF Style!

It’s Christmas time! And aside from the flickering Christmas lights everywhere that mystifies your eyes, bazaars and malls that are always full of people for their Christmas shopping and a thickset Noche Buena to gulp down, we have got the Metro Manila Film Festival 2011 that will make us triple somersault excited.

MMFF is on its 37th astounding year of giving us tremendous films, as we all know, during the course of the festival; no foreign movies are shown across the Philippines making it a money-spinning event for the participating production outfits. So say goodbye for the meantime to Mission Impossible 4, The Lion King and other international movies.

The festival movies were preferred by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on the basis of the following criteria:
1.    Creativity, Artistry and Technical Excellence, Thematic Value and Global Appeal for 70% and;
2.    Filipino Cultural and/or Historical Value for 30%.

So, what awaits us this time around? The Thinking Toast will exploit her finely-honed toasted sense to tell us who’s going to be the top grossing film this year among the seven entries.

1.    Enteng Ng Ina Mo
Star Cinema/M-Zet Films/APT Entertainment/Octo Arts Films
Directed by Tony Y. Reyes

Enteng Ng Ina Mo, a fantasy comedy film, embarks upon the two utterly different worlds of Enteng Kabisote (Vic Sotto) and of Ina Montecillo (Ai Ai delas Alas) as they traverse to each other’s lives. The movie is a cross-over between TheTanging Ina and Enteng Kabisote film-TV series.

Plot/Synopsis

ENTENG KABISOTE (Vic Sotto) wants to retire as the recurrent hero of Engkantasya and have a normal life with his family without the magical elements. INA MONTECILLO (Aiai Delas Alas) longs to have the right partner to be with her for the rest of her life.

One day, Enteng is placed under a powerful evil spell by Engkantasya’s evil fairy SATANA to fall in love with another woman. And when he meets Ina, he exerts all the effort Ina to fall for him. Ina, on the other hand, slowly opens her heart for this new opportunity of love.

2.    Ang Panday 2
GMA Films/Imus Productions, Inc.
Directed by Mac C. Alejandre

Ang Panday 2 or Ang Panday Ikalawang Aklat is an action fantasy film starring Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. as Flavio. It is the sequel of Ang Panday (2009) and the second installment of Panday film series. Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla, Jr. again takes on the role of Flavio -- first popularized by Fernando Poe, Jr. in four successive MMFF entries from 1980 to 1984. Another thing, Ang Panday is said to be the first live action Filipino film to circulate in 3D.

Plot/Synopsis

FLAVIO (Bong Revilla) the legendary blacksmith takes on the challenge of defending the world against evil, from his archenemy, LIZARDO (Philip Salvador) this time with the help of ARLANA (Marian Rivera), a woman who transforms into the dragon Bagwis.

3.   Segunda Mano
Star Cinema/MJM Productions/Agosto Dos Pictures
Directed by Joyce Bernal

Segunda Mano, a horror-suspense film, starring the Philippine's "horror" queen Kris Aquino. Paired for the first time with Dingdong Dantes, the film circled on a second hand bag with a curse that will haunt everyone in Kris Aquino’e life.

Plot/Synopsis

MABEL (Kris Aquino), the owner of a swanky, but uncanny antique shop. She wants to move on for feeling guilty for having caused the death of her sister. She meets IVAN GALVEZ (Dingdong Dantes), a rich architect who wants to find the perfect wife and mother for his young daughter. After Ivan proposes, an unknown ghost starts haunting Mabel and endangering everyone around her.

4.   Shake Rattle & Roll 13
Regal Entertainment Inc./Regal Multimedia, Inc.
Directed by Chris Martinez, Richard Somes and Jerrold Tarog

Shake, Rattle, & Roll 13 is a horror trilogy film. MMFF is not complete without SRR on it. Regal Films has made it to the point to make the Shake, Rattle & Roll series an annual thing ever since Shake, Rattle and Roll 2K5 back in 2005.

Plot/Synopsis

The first episode, called “Rain, Rain Go Away,” directed by Chris Martinez, revolves around a woman’s fear of floods and typhoons. It is a revenge story. It is about guilt; about a sin that one could not run away from.

Richard Somes directs the second episode “Tamawo” (an Ilonggo word for a mythical creature). It is about ALAN (Zanjoe Marudo) who brings his wife (Maricar Reyes) and stepson (Bugoy CariƱo) to a provincial ranch, after his uncle died a mysterious death. There the family encounters supernatural creatures.

In Episode 3, “Parola,” two girls (Kathryn Fernando and Louise de los Reyes) are stalked by spirits residing in a haunted lighthouse.

5.   My Househusband (Ikaw Na!)
Octo Arts Films
Directed by Jose Javier Reyes

My Househusband, a hilarious drama film by the real life couple, Judy Ann and Ryan Agoncillo, will surely be like their previous movies Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo and Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo. Short sequences, fast-paced storytelling, droll dialogues.

Plot/Synopsis

Nothing prepared ROD (Ryan Agoncillo) and MIA ALVAREZ (Judy Ann Santos) for the major changes that take place after he loses his job as a bank manager. Overqualified in a scarce job market, he eventually has to agree to take care of the house and children after their trusted housekeeper had to leave for an emergency vacation. As Rod learns the ropes in running a household, Mia’s career in insurance begins to blossom. Trapped at home, Rod befriends their neighbour, Aida (Eugene Domingo), whom everyone knows is a kept woman of a rich man. As Rod and Aida’s friendship intensifies, Mia gets suspicious about Aida’s intentions.

6.   Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow
Regal Entertainment, Inc.
Directed by Jun Lana

When we heard about the title of the movie, we’ll think it’s a remake of the 1963 Italian film starring Sophia Loren but no, it’s not. Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow is a new movie altogether about love, loss, and dishonesty. Showcasing the diamond star Maricel Soriano.

Plot/Synopsis

What happens when a family faced a tragedy and how it will change each and every member and how will they deal with that tragedy that befalls them? Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow will soon answer your question.

7.    Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story
VIVA Communications, Inc./Scenema Concept Int’l.
Directed by Tikoy Aguiluz

Manila Kingpin is based on the story of the notorious gang leader in Tondo named Nicasio "Asiong" Salonga, whose true-to-life accounts had been portrayed in several movie versions since 1961 (starring Joseph Estrada). It is also the first Filipino major film produced in black-and-white in the 21st century as well as the returning action genre movie.

The "Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story" replaced the entry "Mr. Wong" after action star Robin Padilla voluntarily withdrew his film from the race.

Plot/Synopsis

Mobster Asiong Salonga (ER Ejercito) rules the mean streets of Manila with an iron fist—until he is betrayed by a trusted friend. Mr. Salonga was a sanitary inspector who had several brushes with the law in the 1940s and ’50s, charged mostly for illegal possession of firearms. His name was linked to several murders, but somehow he managed to evade arrest. His name brought fear to the residents of Tondo, making him Tondo’s “Number One Tough Guy.” Mr. Salonga was killed at the age of 27 in 1951 when he was gunned down during a drinking session.
